Jabsco Pump Install & Test

Been wanting to do an Intercooler upgrade of some kind for a while now and I finally stumbled across a deal on a new Jabsco pump part # 50840-0012. Got it for $125 shipped from the SVT forum. Plan to install it this weekend. In addition I'll be switching out as much of the system from 5/8 to 3/4 as possible and I may even lay up a new tank with fiberglass resevoir to fit where the stock one does now but increase the capicity. The new pump is said to flow 29gpm free flow verses the Bosch pump rated at 5gpm free flow. As I make progress I will keep the thread updated. Excited to do testing and see what if any difference is made. At this point I'm just glad to be tinkering with the truck again.

Good luck....

probably be better to go with an aluminum tank over a fiberglass one though....imo

An external pump? Why? You already have a triple fuel assembly

Intercooler pump. Doing away with the Bosch pump. I went back and added some details to my original post to clear that up.

Intial results: mounted the pump last night. Still using the stock IC resevoir tank. It has a 1" nipple on it that the existing setup necks down to 3/4 before connecting to the Bosch pump. No longer is that the case. I found some 3/4NPT x 1" adapters to thread into the new pump. Bought 6' of 1" heater hose. Now the hose from the tank to the pump is 1" and from the tank to the heat exchanger. This added volume to the system. I have elminated my 2nd heat exchanger at this time. It's far to restrictive. I will either modify it or chunk it.
First impression. The Bosch pump flowed 2gpm through the system. Measured it repeatedly. The Jabsco pump, well I'm gonna have to have some help to measure it, as it flows to quickly and empties the resevoir. It is silent when running.

Driving test: My driving around town temps no boost have not changed. They range 20-24 degrees above ambient when crusing the highway and 24-28 degrees above ambient outside temps when sitting idle. Btw my IAT sensor is the runner of cylinder 5. Gotta love the aluminum intake.

Torcher test: I was only able to do a short hard run last night as it started to rain. 0-90mph with no increase in IAT's. Started at 114f and remained there. I want to repeat my torcher test from a while ago. 80 degrees outside with back to back to 0-126mph runs followed by a quick slow down and 60-126mph which peaked my IAT's at 136f. Hope to do it today. If there's no increase in IAT's I will be headed back to the drag strip to see if I can break 12.6.

May want to check your sources on the Bosch pump 88racing. She's rated at 317gph or 5.28gpm.

If you don't reuse you're second cooler or original pump/wiring I would like to purchase it with any hoses you don't need too. Stupid me sold the extra cooler whipple accidently gave me. I should have used it.

My only concern would be the fluid not spending enough time in the heat exchanger to cool off with such a high powered pump.

Some great info on that subject out there. theres some good info on the Lightning and SVT forums. Heres one article http://www.dc.engr.scu.edu/cmdoc/dg_doc/develop/design/cooling/31000005.htm

Quick update. Pump is performing well and I was able to perform a torcher test to see what IAT's would do.

Old Test (Bosch Pump, Both the Whipple and supplemental HE's)
Test 1: WOT 0-126mph then decelerate in 3rd gear (no braking) down to 60mph then WOT back to 126mph. Record peak temps on both runs.
Ambient air temp 71F
Air Charge Temp peaked at 136F on both runs.

New Test (Jabsco Pump, Whipple HE only)
Test 1: WOT 0-126mph then decelerate in 3rd gear (no braking) down to 60mph then WOT back to 126mph. Record peak temps on both runs.
Ambient air temp 84F
Air Charge Temp peaked at 132F.

Summary: IAT's went down 4 degrees even though ambient temps were up 13 degrees. IAT's remained lower for longer. I didn't reach 132F until the truck reached 126mph and the soft rev limiter came in. I was well into the run before temps rose at all. With a larger reservoir this will be even better. I should be able to run the quarter mile without IAT's exceeding 120F which means 13-14degrees of timing minimum verses seeing it pulled down to 11 degrees.

Will repeat test again when ambient temps are 71F in order to have a fair comparison.

I thought I would post some pics of the install since I haven't had a chance to test the efficiency of the setup under 71 degree circumstances. Also here's a quick list of things you'll need should you decide to take this step.
Jabsco pump 50840-0012 Mount under the radiator with self tapping screws
6' of 1" hose. Cut length from Whipple reservoir to pump. Remaining hose goes from pump outlet to HE.
3 1" hose clamps
2 ty-wraps
4 self tapping screws 1"x1/4"
2 3/4NPT male thread by 1" nipple fittings. These screw in to the pump outlet and inlet.

1" hose feeding the HE. HE has a 3/4 nipple so I slid a 1" long piece of 3/4" hose on it then slid the 1" over it and clamped it.

1" from reservoir to pump. Whipple reservoir actually has a 1" outlet.

Tywrap securing hose to transmission lines. Hose running from reservoir to pump.

View of the pump mounted looking in through the front bumper

Thanks Thomas. I'm happy with it so far. Gotta put some loom around the wiring to make it look nice. Other then that I want to fab up a larger reservoir and possibly install an AFCO heat exchanger for the GT500.
