5.8 Litre gas mileage

I had an 89 f250 with a 5.8 and a ZF 5 speed. I drove it from Labrador to Alberta with a big box on the back full of stuff and a Ford Focus behind it on a dolly. I don't know how much this weighed but the box full of stuff was very heavy, pointed my headlights to the sky and split both rear rims. Anyway I averaged 400 kms between fill ups. I had front and rear tanks too, so about 200 kms per tank. Also the truck had a 3" body lift and 33 x 12.50 tires. Rear end ratio was 4.10. Not great milage but pulled the mess easily.

I had an 88 F250 4x4 with the 351, C6, 3.55 axle and 33" tires. Fuel mileage went from Bad to Worse. Got about 16 hwy and 12 city. I miss that truck!
At the time, I had a friend with the same truck with the 460 and his mileage was about 16 hwy and 10 city; so if I did it again, I would get the 460.
Best improvement: Thorley Headers and dual exhaust.

Try like 9-10 mpg when towing with the 5.4........ And I only have a #4500 travel trailer! I do get around 14-15 mpg when not towing.
The 5.4 is a great engine, but consider the fact that an F250 weighs probably a good #1000 more then an F150 even before you load it up.
For a #6000 trailer, that would be about the most I'd tow with the 5.4 no matter what 'frame' it was bolted to.
I get pretty decent performance while towing my trailer, but you know it's there and forget about running in OD.
I towed with an '89 E250 van with the 5.8 in it. Try around 6 mpg. It only got 12 mpg when empty. I think that's why they gave 'em two tanks! I remember only getting around 150 miles per tank. This was towing a #6000 utility trailer from coast to coast. It did ok on the flats at 60 mph, but it really struggled on the hills. Sometimes I was in first with my foot to the floor and moving at 25 mph!
