Yellow plunger sitting loose in tranny pan ???

Went to change my automatic trans filter and in the pan was a small yellow plunger looking thing with and O-ring on it. Anyone know where this goes? It was just laying in the pan.
Thanks..

It's supposed to be there. Ford uses it to plug the dipstick hole in the tranny before the dipstick gets installed. When the dipstick tube is installed, it falls on the bottom of the transmission pan. They all have one if the pan has never been off.

Talking

You may be a winner! Take it to your nearest Ford dealer to have the secret code read on the o-ring! The grand prize is a '74 Pinto!

Please, can the moderators make "I found this in my pan" a sticky!

OK cool. I figured it was something like that since there are no holes it fits in except the dipstick. Got worried after the clowns at the parts strore told me it's some kind of over pressure valve.

Boy I'm glad I found this post. Had my son change my fluid last night and we found the plug also. WE looked for an hour trying to figure out where it would go. Just finally gave up and put the pan back on and filled it with fluid. Every thing was fine afterward so we figured it was just a left over from production.

I love this forum

I am a new member and new to me owner of a '05 F150 FX4 Scab.

Of course, one of my first things to do are:
1. change the oil and filter
2. change the tranny oil and filter

I am SOOOO glad I was poking around and found this sticky - I would have freaked out if I found that plug in the pan as we just rebuilt a tranny in our other SUV...not fun for the wallet.

Worst part is that I bet you find it after you make the big oily mess, carefully carry the pan over to your drain bucket, then as you are cursing the fact you slopped some oil out of the pan during the carry...you pour the leftover pan oil into your bucket and you notice a big object plop down into your bucket-o-nasty with the thought "what the crap was that?"

Glad I did some pre-reading
