Heres the facts...

This has happened 3 times for me in the past week.

1) under Heavy or Light acceleration or constant speed
2) hear a whirring noise from the front of the truck
3) slow down to nearly a stop < 10 MPH
4) Hear 2 clunks, 1 on passenger side then immediately following 1 on drivers side
5) problem goes away for a day or two and then happens again

The best way i can describe it is that it sounds like i am trying to engage my 4wd and the gears are just spinning until i slow down enough for the teeth to engage.

Here are my findings on my problem above.

Removal of IWE Solenoid from bracket if your new one didn't come with a new bracket and you need to reuse the old one. Just clips into the bracket, clip shown here.

Spent $390 at the dealer today. I wanted to spare my trans/transfer case.

It's a 2005 with 49k mi. Highway. Babied truck.

All the sudden I hear this CLUNK then a bearing noise. Or so I thought.

We paid to have $30 can of lube .... applied to the slip yoke. Not it.

Then, finally, I discovered that when I put it into 4wd, the noise stopped immediately.

WHY, isn't it designed to require vacuum to go TO 4WD, versus staying in 2wd. What a blunder. You could save some hubs, damn it, and a lot of quick actions to pull off the road because of the grinding and banging.

THIS IS A SAFETY PROBLEM, FOLKS.

I love Ford. That's all I buy, but it's time to stand up and do a recall on this.

It won't happen until a class action.

State your interest. If it is repaired under recall, your money spent to fix their blunder will be refunded.

It's a Ford truck. It shouldn't rely on vacuum, or suck so much, to keep it in gear.

Well, I started to experience this intermittent problem and, after checking the forum, just spent $37.00 to fix the problem. This site is great! Two issues with my truck in a week, check the forum and save hundreds by repairing myself. Yowza!!!

 

Just ordered the new part myself, will switch it out with the old one tonight and hopefully it solves the problem. Thanks for the pics

Hi noticed you just replaced IWE soleniod, where did you pick up part Dealer or are they available aftermarket.

 

I believe you have to get the part from a Ford dealership because it is a motorcraft part. I picked it up at my dealership here for $28 with tax.

 

Thanks for info picked 1 up this morning from Ford $37 Can. Had it installed in 20 min. . Its amazing how much money you can save with a little bit of reading here on F150 online.

 

I just had to say THANK YOU so much for your post and pictures of the IWE solenoid replacement process. I have a 2004 F-150, and am going through this same problem. Being a woman, there's always the stereotype that we don't know what we're talking about when it comes to auto repair. I went to the dealership today to get the NEW design of the IWE solenoid. Armed with the part numbers, both old design, and new, obtained from here. The service tech told me they only carry the OLD design, and that they are exactly the same part. I argued the difference with him, and asked to see the part so I could point out the difference based on what I had learned from your pics, and he refused. I told him to order me the NEW solenoid and gave him the part number. I explained that I was not stupid and that it was obvious that they had some inventory of the old parts they'd like to get rid of, but that I wasn't going to be one of the takers. I paid for my NEW part, $31.25 with tax. LOL, my husband went along for moral support I guess, and told me later how proud he was of how I handled thhe situation. THANKS AGAIN!!!
